IBRD Provides Ukraine with USD 150 million to Fight COVID-19

On December 10, 2021, at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) it was decided to extend to Ukraine a loan for implementation of the project "Additional Financing for the Ukraine Emergency COVID-19 Response and Vaccination Project" and to provide additional USD 150 million loan. These funds will help prevent, detect and respond to the threats posed by COVID-19 and strengthen Ukraine’s national public health system.

The Loan Agreement was signed on December 13, 2021.

The additional funding is planned to be allocated to the already existing project signed on 17 May 2021 (project "Ukraine Emergency COVID-19 Response and Vaccination Project"), the loan amount of which is USD 90 million.

The IBRD loan will be used to strengthen the public health system, support emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic through: 

  • the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines and logistics services; 
  • acquisition of cold chain facilities and logistics infrastructure;
  • conducting training for medical staff;
  • improvement of medical waste management systems and their utilization; 
  • purchase and installation of autoclaves and other devices for disinfection and disposal of waste; 
  • conducting vaccination campaigns, developing information systems; 
  • purchasing IT equipment for vaccination management;
  • other urgent measures to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Ukraine.
